Moschato Spinas
Moschato Spinas is a white early variety with a characteristic aroma. Moschato, one of the oldest varieties in Greece, is cultivated everywhere the country (in Chrysopigi Pyrgou with the Cretan-Venetian winepresses, the location name Moschata still exists) and especially in Samos, producing the fine sweet Samos wine. In Crete it is known from the mountainous area of Selinos, Chania province, where Spina village is located. About 600,000 sq. m (according to YAAT real estate management 2015) are cultivated in Crete.
This is a variety of moderate liveliness and productivity, which adapts to various soil and climate environments. The quality of the wine products and their Muscat character is strongly influenced by the altitude, the orientation of the vineyards, etc. The variety is highly sensitive to powdery mildew, downy mildew, botrytis, and the European grapevine moth.
It is medium-sized, cylindrical-conical or cylindrical, with small to medium spherical grapes, with a thick golden-yellow or greenish-yellow skin and soft juicy flesh, very sweet, with a characteristic Muscat aroma.
This variety produces dry but also sweet wines with strong aromas.
