The project

The project “Digital Wine Routes: Wine as a means of advertising and promotion of the cultural wealth of Heraklion” aims to:

  • Highlight the age-old wine making activity in the Municipality of Heraklion, where the oldest winery in the world exists,
  • Present the native varieties and the wineries of the region through a rich digital material,
  • Get to know the wine producers through presentations and interviews,
  • Digitally record and document objects, tools and machines, related to Heraklion’s wine,
  • Carry out digital interactive tours in the wine routes of Heraklion through an application for mobile devices and a smart app with AR (Augmented Reality).

The project was implemented by the Planning, Organization and Information Technology Department of the Municipality of Heraklion, under the responsibility of the Information Technology Department. It has been included in the Operational Program “CRETE 2021-2027” and it was financed by the European Union (European Fund of Regional Development) and national resources.

Web Portla - Virtual Wine Museum

The history of winemaking in Crete is closely associated with the history of the island, as traces of systematic vine cultivation and winemaking are discovered since the Minoan era.

The sections of the web portal focus on:

  • The history of the vine and wine in Crete as well as the wine trade since the antiquity till our times,
  • The peculiarities of the Cretan vineyard, the cultivation methods and the grape varieties,
  • The approach of modern winemaking and the acquaintance with wineries of the Wines of Crete Network in the greater area of Heraklion,
  • The presentation of the special customs, feasts, professions and other records related to the wine in Crete,
  • The recording of narratives in storytelling videos and the creation of a digital museum,
  • The acquaintance with grape and wine derivatives and their use in cooking.
